Eco-breastfeeding

Welcome to The Breastfeeding Cafe Carnival!

This post was written as part of The Breastfeeding Cafe's Carnival. For more info on the Breastfeeding Cafe, go to www.breastfeedingcafe.wordpress.com. For more info on the Carnival or if you want to participate, contact Claire at clindstrom2 {at} gmail {dot} com. Today's post is about how the mothers before you influenced your choice to breastfeed. Please read the other blogs in today's carnival listed below and check back for more posts July 18th through the 31st!

While I will admit that the decision to breastfeed the boys had nothing to do with a desire to be ecologically sound, it was something that makes a LOT of sense to me.  Our bodies are made to make the perfect food for our baby and do so with minimal need for additional food intake.  And, I suspect it makes for a very small carbon ‘footprint’ for an infant (assuming you aren’t filling up landfills with baby paraphernalia.)

What I can say is that being environmentally conscience did begin to weave its way into my life over time.

We’ve cloth diapered since P was born, using disposable diapers for outings (and nighttime for my super soaking boys.)  Cost savings was a major motivator for the decision to cloth diaper, but being environmentally friendly was an extra benefit for that choice.  I also try to more carefully evaluate whether something is going to add value to our lives rather than become the next broken piece of plastic needing to join the landfill.  (This is still a work in progress, though.)

I will admit to feeling less ecologically minded now that we live somewhere with fewer options for recycling.  Only newspaper and aluminum cans are being recycled at the moment, although I need to look at what I can drive to the dump to recycle.  And, I am re-using large plastic and different glass containers to stretch their useful life and minimize what goes to the landfill.  Without the boys, I’m not sure if I would have become more interested in living our lives with an eye to the environment.
